WestStar Credit Union was born as Howard Hughes Employees' Federal Credit Union on October 17th, 1975, serving the employee's of Howard Hughes Corporation. In the beginning, the credit union was housed in a tiny office within the Silver Slipper Casino.
On June 28th, 1978, the credit union's name was changed to Summa Employees' Federal Credit Union and spent the remainder of the 1970's growing the asset base to $4,085,276 and began adding new gaming establishments as Select Employee Groups (SEG's). In 1989, the credit union's name was changed to WestStar Federal Credit Union.
WestStar Federal Credit Union acquired southern Nevada State Savings & Credit Union in 1990 and Las Vegas Sun Federal Credit Union in 1991. The credit union grew to over $45 million in assets. A merger with Bally's Federal Credit Union boosted assets to over $72 million by year-end 1993.
By the end of 1999, the credit union grew to an asset size of $94 million and continued adding new SEG's. In 1997, the credit union converted to a state charter, thus dropping the Federal from our name and becoming Weststar Credit Union.
Throughout the years, WestStar Credit Union focused on becoming the preferred credit union for gaming employees. WestStar truly understands the unique needs of the gaming industry for service, excellence, and convenience.
In June, 2000, WestStar Credit Union's asset size reached $100 million with over 27,000 members in Las Vegas and Reno. The year 2005 marked our 30th anniversary, and we are proud of where we have come from, and where we are going in the future.
2006 has been a year worthy of a celebration. All of our branch ATM's, as well as serveral back of house casino locations, have been upgraded to newer, more secure machines. The branch ATM's are also able to be enhanced to accept larger cash deposits and more efficient check verification. We have also added over 5000 new surcharge free ATM's, in Nevada alone, with the addition of 7-Eleven locations. This year, we also redesigned and re-structured our website - adding more functionality and a more appealing look, while remaining tailored to our gaming brand. This year, we have also been able to complete the remodel of our Pecos Branch. With a re-Grand Opening Bash scheduled for December, this branch is quite deserving of a celebration. |
